Hola clase,
So this week we will be testing :( I know. I hope you are all studying for your chapter test and you have revirewed your grammar. The current event/ tertulias were a success. We will continue doing tertulias so you are all expected to be ready to present. Remember we are focusing of speaking the rest of the year.
This week in class SO9 we will also begin our book: El libro secreto de Daniel Torres. With it we will travel to Argentina and our country's capital. I will be checking your vocabulary list on Tuesday to make sure you will be able to keep up with the reading. Based on the book you will also be working with grammar. You will need to be able to identify the present, present progressive, preterite and the imperfect in the reading. It will take us a while to read this book since we are only reading for part of the class each day. There will be reflections assigned and other related activities to the reading. At the end of the book you will write a book report and receive AR points for the reading.
SO8 we will be reading and listening to some conversations in different/realistic settings. You will then be asked to recreate or discuss information from the reading.
I
will be combining your shopping chapter with the community chapter. Plan on
creating your own store which will then be located in the community we will
create as a class. I have not decided yet if we will have a fashion show or
not. I will let you know.
SO8: you need to bring the following workbook pages to class. The rest will be assigned as homework. For Wed/Thursday bring: section 2 pages 35-38 (writing/audio section).

SO9: Our next big
grammar topic will be the imperfect. You will be assigned videos to watch and
take notes on. You will then be asked to explain it to a classmate and compare
your explanation with their's and figure out if you are both correct or
semi-correct. This will be one of our tertulias. Be prepared for lots of work
with this tense since it is important. Once you feel confident with this
grammar topic you will be asked to create a mini video to present to the SO8
class who will begin learning the concept shortly. For the mini video you will
once again work in pairs. You will provide examples, show the difference
between it and the preterite, explain its purpose, etc. In order to film you
will have the option of using the classroom/ board etc. before class on the
dates assigned. you can also do it on your computer with a camera if you so
wish. We will discuss this soon but be prepared.
We will then
return to food and the formal commands to make sure you understand it well. For
this topic, we will be helping in a healthy food project for a local children's
hospital (Children's Miracle Network). You will be given community service hours and recognition for your
participation in the acknowledgment section of the book, once published. So we
have a busy 9 weeks.

week of 22 January
Welcome back from a long weekend!
This week we start a new quarter, be ready for it to get a bit more intense.
SO8:
Your current events are due 24/25 Jan. Country: Costa Rica/Nicaragua and the topic was your choice. I will be choosing about 7-10 of you for our first tertulia session. Those chosen will discuss their article in a group and then we will all ask questions, discuss the article, give our opinions, etc.
This week we will finish with reflexive verbs. Expect homework every night. You will also need your workbook. We will be writing a paragraph and have a peer editing session as well before you turn it in to me. Hope you have been studying because you will be having the chapter test the last week of January.
After we finish this chapter we will begin reading conversations in different locations. You will then be using these examples to create your own.

We once again are reviewing stem changing and irregular forms of the preterite! We will be finishing with our sports chapter. Your project will be due 25th January. be ready to present on that day. I am placing the websites to help in your project below.

So this week is our 9 week exam. We will also begin working on reflexive verbs for SO8 and SO9 we will review stem changing preterite forms. We will continue working on our vocabulary. SO9 your sports project will be due on the 25th. Remember to look up the information and place it on a power point. Bienvenidos :)
This week we will be concentrating on our new vocabulary which was given to you prior to break. We will be doing activities related to the vocabulary including reading comprehensions. You might have a pop quiz at the end of the week so be ready.
After the end of this 9 weeks we will begin having TERTULIAS. These will be speaking group sessions. We will do them every 2 weeks. During that week you will be placed in groups and will alternate who is inside participating in the tertulia and who will be outside working on vocabualry related activities. Tertulias will be based on vocabulary being studied, something we read or your current events. Yes, more current events since we have only covered South America. Next places to cover are Central America, then the Caribbean and the Spain and Guinea Ecuatorial. Be prepared to have more homework as well this 9 weeks. Homework will now be due the following class since some of you are having time management problems.
Keep studying with the sites in past blogs. We will be taking our 9 week exam on the 14th and 15th of January (no ifs, ands, or buts). It will not be changed due to interims. To study use past blog postings, there are games and activities to practice. Be prepared!!!!
Remember come January English will only be spoken on Fridays for SO8.
In January we will also begin reading our first book SO9. So8 we will be reading magazine articles and preparing for our Civil Rights unit in February. So9 you will have a small project about Hispanic Sports when we return.
Extra Credit: (for each 5 slide minimum and 15 slide maximum) For 2nd quarter due prior to 15 January, NOT after. For 3rd quarter no later than 01 March!
1. go to the Jr. Orange Bowl Parade(Do not purchase tickets, you can stand on Miracle Mile and watch the parade for free, if you go to the grand stand then you must pay, that is the end part of the parade) this one starts at 4 pm.) and/or 3 Kings parade, take pics and create a 5 slide power point describing in Spanish what you saw
for 3 Kings parade visit: http://www.meetup.com/MiamiFunInexpensive/events/95230272/ (it is not until Jan. 20th, so it will be for 3rd quarter extra credit). This year the Miami Heat’s own Three Kings — LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh — will be parade Grand Marshals
2. SO8 create a video or powerpoint of your daily routine from time you awaken to go to sleep. (I showed you some examples). In powerpoint put the vocabulary word for each action
3. SO9 go to a local soccer or baseball game or practice game, take pics/video then create a powerpoint describing what occured as if you were the "locutor" (sports commentator). Use your vobulary words
4. Take pics or video of your vacation/holiday celebration and create a powerpoint/video describing the event and what occured
